Gas travels from the cylinder or mains supply through a regulator and into the stove. Turning a knob opens a valve that feeds gas to the burner jet, where it mixes with air. Pressing the knob triggers an igniter that sparks across the electrode and lights the mixture. On most modern hobs a thermocouple senses the flame and keeps the valve open; if the flame goes out, it shuts the gas off.
A fault in any one of these parts can stop the burner or make the flame unsafe, so our technicians check gas flow, spark and safety cut-off together.
